TRAFFIC RULES IN VIRGINIA

Whether you're a Virginia resident or visiting from out of state, it’s important to know the basic driving rules before hitting the road around Richmond Raceway. Here’s a simple overview to help you stay safe and avoid unwanted surprises during your NASCAR experience.

Driving side

Just like the rest of the U.S., drivers in Virginia stay on the right-hand side of the road.

Speed limits

  • Residential areas: 25–30 mph
  • Primary state roads and highways: 45–60 mph
  • Interstates: Up to 70 mph where posted. Always follow posted speed limit signs and adjust your speed for traffic, weather, and construction zones.

Traffic signals and right turns on red

Drivers must obey all traffic signals and signage. In Virginia, right turns on red are allowed after coming to a complete stop, unless a sign specifically prohibits it. Always yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic before turning.

Driving under the influence (DUI)

Virginia has strict DUI laws. The legal limit is 0.08% BAC for drivers aged 21 and older. There’s zero tolerance for underage drivers with any detectable alcohol. DUI offenses can result in fines, license suspension, and even jail time, especially for repeat violations or high BAC levels.

Seat belt requirements

Virginia law requires all occupants to wear seat belts, regardless of seating position. Police officers can pull drivers over and issue a ticket solely for not wearing a seat belt.

Right of way – yield to

  • Pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Other vehicles already in or entering an intersection
  • Be especially alert around Richmond Raceway on race weekend. Foot traffic is heavy, and law enforcement is on-site, directing vehicles and pedestrians.

If you're pulled over by police in Virginia

  • Pull over safely using your turn signal. Stop on the right shoulder or in a well-lit, safe area.
  • Stay in your vehicle with your seat belt fastened and hands visible on the steering wheel. If it’s dark, turn on your interior light.
  • Wait for instructions. Only reach for your license, registration, and proof of insurance when asked.
  • Remain calm and polite. Avoid arguing or making sudden movements.
  • If ticketed, sign the citation. Signing does not mean you’re admitting guilt–only that you’ve received it.
  • You may ask if you’re free to go. You are only required to provide ID and documents, not answer unrelated questions.
  • Document the stop if needed. You can take note of the officer’s name, badge number, and patrol vehicle number. If something feels off, complaints can be filed later through proper channels.
